See a cardiologist if you have chest pain, unexplained breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness or fainting, a strong family history of heart disease, or if your GP has flagged high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol. A baseline evaluation after age 40 is also wise.

Central chest discomfort or heaviness lasting more than a few minutes, pain radiating to the jaw, back or left arm, sudden sweating, shortness of breath, nausea or a sense of impending doom. If you suspect a heart attack, call 108 immediately – do not drive yourself.

Angiography is a diagnostic test that uses contrast dye and X-ray to visualise blockages in your heart arteries. Angioplasty (PCI) is the treatment – a balloon and stent are used to open the blocked artery. Both are usually performed through the wrist (radial) or groin (femoral).

Angioplasty is performed under local anaesthesia – you stay awake and feel only mild pressure. Most patients are discharged within 24–48 hours and can return to routine activities within a week, with full recovery over 4–6 weeks.

Do 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week, eat a Mediterranean-style diet rich in vegetables, whole grains and lean protein, avoid tobacco, limit alcohol, sleep 7–8 hours, manage stress, and get annual checks of BP, sugar and cholesterol – especially if there is a family history.

After angioplasty or device implantation, follow-ups are typically at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and then annually. Adherence to prescribed medication (especially antiplatelets and statins) is critical.
